When will you start seeing the signs of pregnancy?
The first week of your pregnancy is decided based on the date of the last day of your last menstrual period (LMP). You may start seeing the first signs of pregnancy in the first week after your period ends, or you may see the signs 2-3 weeks later.
Below are some commons signs of pregnancy that you might notice:
1.Your period is late Delay in period is the most common sign of pregnancy. But it is not necessary that a delayed period is because of pregnancy. You can consult a doctor to know more.
2.You might notice a vaginal discharge or have stomach cramping
When the fertilised egg attaches to the wall of the uterus, a little bleeding is expected. It is quite common to confuse this bleeding with period. This is actually called spotting and usually happens 2-4 weeks after fertilisation. During this time, you could also get stomach pain or cramps which might feel similar to menstrual cramps. It is OK if this has not happened to you, as it may not happen to all women.
3.You might be having morning sickness or vomiting
Vomiting is a common sign of pregnancy. Even though this is called “Morning Sickness”, it can happen to you at any time during the day. This usually ends after the first trimester of pregnancy, but can sometimes continue throughout the 9 months.
4.You might feel breast pain or soreness in the breasts
4-6 weeks into your pregnancy, you might feel pain, soreness or heaviness in your breasts. These changes happen due to the changing levels of progesterone and estrogen hormones in your body. You can wear a comfortable bra for some relief.
5.You might notice a change in breast colour
The colour of your nipples and breasts may darken. This happens because of the change in estrogen hormone in your body. This change is usually noticeable in the 11th - 12th week of your pregnancy. It may not happen to all women, so don’t worry if it does not happen to you.
6.You might be having mood swings
It is normal to have times when you feel too sad or too happy. But sometimes, your emotions might get unpredictable. You might be happy at one minute and then start crying in the next minute. This happens because of the changes in hormones in your body. This may not mean that you are pregnant, so it is advisable to take a pregnancy test for confirmation.
7.You might have a headache
A frequent headache is a common sign of pregnancy. Again, a headache can be caused due to other reasons. So it is advisable to consult a doctor or take a pregnancy test for confirmation.
8.You might feel tired throughout the day
In the early stages of pregnancy, there is an increase in the level of progesterone hormones. Along with this, your body prepares itself for the growing baby. These changes might increase your blood pressure, which can make you feel tired. You might feel more tired in the beginning and towards the end of your pregnancy.
9.You might notice that your stomach has become bigger
Because of the increase in progesterone levels, your digestive system becomes slow. The food you eat stays in your stomach for a longer time, which can lead to stomach growth and weight gain. This usually starts 4-6 weeks after you get pregnant. Many women confuse this growth in the stomach with the baby growing bigger, which is not correct.
10.You might have a fever or high body temperature
Body temperature usually increases around the time of your period. But if the high temperature continues for 10-18 days after your delayed period date, it can be a sign of pregnancy. Your body temperature generally rises in the 6th week of pregnancy.
11.You might have some unusual food cravings
One of the common signs of pregnancy is that you might want to eat certain special items like raw mangoes, tamarind, guavas or ice cream. This usually happens 3 months after the start of pregnancy.
Due to the decrease of iron and some other minerals in the body, some women even feel like eating mud or coal. This is commonly known as PICA syndrome. Do NOT eat things like mud, coal or anything else that can harm you or your baby. Contact your doctor if you have these urges. Take special care of your diet and eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.
